Mortality in older adults with severe mental illness: the role of metabolic syndrome and its components

Introduction Studies in adult psychiatric patients consistently call attention to premature mortality and its association with metabolic syndrome. However, the utility of syndrome construct is controversial older adults general population, since literature shows that some components, such as obesity, can be protective against mortality. In mental illness, only one study explored relation between found no association. Objectives To examine whether or any components predicted a cohort disorders, determine if this differs across diagnostic groups. Methods We used multicentric prospective design follow, over 5 years, included 634 in– outpatients schizophrenia, bipolar major depressive disorder (MDD). Metabolic was assessed at baseline following NCEP-ATPIII criteria. Cause death categorized cardiovascular (CVD) mortality, non-CVD disease-related suicide accident. Results significant all-cause, CVD an increased all-cause subpopulation MDD, even after adjustment for age, sex smoking status (p=0.032 p=0.036, respectively).
